Belleville, Illinois
Swan's Court Bed & Breakfast
HISTORY and ANTIQUES Belleville
Monty Dixon hopes her new neighbors will maintain the Bed & Breakfast she has run for a decade on quiet Court Street. She'll even include all the antique furnishings, rugs and other goods, already in place.
But, she'd also be happy with a family that would use it as a private residence. Either way, she expects new owners will come to appreciate, the grand brick home built in 1883 by the great great granddaughter of Pierre Laclede, founder of St. Louis.
Located on an L-shaped corner lot in the historic Hexenbukel Neighborhood in Belleville, Swan's Court Bed & Breakfast is on the market so Dixon can cut down on the stairs she has to climb. She's not moving far, though, just across the, street.
When she bought the 3,000-square foot residence 10 years ago, it had been occupied by one family for more than 80 years. The condition of the home was a mixed blessing. While much of what made it "true to it's generation" remained, including: oak floors throughout, 12 foot high ceilings on both floors, 6-1/2 foot tall windows, three fireplaces, 10-inch-high baseboards and, a walnut staircase. However, important updating needed to be done.
Dixon spent 11 months restoring the house. It has been re plumbed and rewired to commercial standards, also, two central air conditioning units were installed.
She added modern convenience, without sacrificing historic touches no longer found in modern homes. Of the five oversized bedrooms, three now have a full or three-quarter bathroom, including a second floor suite. In addition, there is a full bath room off the the upper hallway. A half-bath is located in the basement along with the laundry room. The 15 by 18 living room and the 12 by 19 dining room have heavy cove molding overhead, with picture rails beneath them.
French doors open onto a wide screened-in front porch that wraps around the side of the house and offers access to a wheelchair ramp. Across the back of the house, tall shutters enclose a back porch that can be entered from the kitchen and from a 12 by 17 room (currently used as the fifth guest bedroom.)
A one car garage is under the house with an entrance off "E" Street A brick driveway and a patio are located along the side facing Court Street.
The property lines run all the way back to a short alley that empties onto "D" Street and a back yard.
Located at 421 Court Street
3,000 square foot brick home with five bedrooms and five bathrooms.
